Quote of The Week:
“The art of the hero wasn’t about being brave; it was about being so competent that bravery wasn’t an issue.”
― Christopher McDougall
Hello hello everybody!
I’m back from three weeks in the hills, and I’m officially a certified yoga teacher! I’ve also just gotten off a series of buses to Panama and I have food poisoning, so today’s FFF is going to be brief.
I’ll be sharing the yogi experience in more depth in the coming weeks for The Unfamiliar Movement Project. If you’d like to read along, here’s a link for a discount on the exclusive content:
An Amazing Book:
While I was up there in the jungle, putting myself into flexy poses and contemplating life, I read some awesome books. The one that stood out the most, that I haven’t shut up about to the people in my life, was Natural Born Heroes by Christopher McDougall:
Oh. My. GOD. This BOOK! Like I said, I haven’t shut up about it.
Did y’all know that on the island of Crete in 1944 (the heat of WWII) a Nazi general named Heinrich Kreipe was captured by a British officer and a ragtag group of Greek shepherds under cover of night?
I certainly didn’t. Now I think it was the most interesting event I’ve ever read about from WWII. Let me reiterate:
In Nazi-occupied territory, under cover of darkness, a British operative and a group of Greek shepherds brazenly kidnapped the highest-ranking officer on the entire island as a prisoner of war.
How? McDougall argues it was because knew how to use their bodies in a way that’s been forgotten by the western world.
Natural Born Heroes is McDougall’s study of movement. In between the story of abducting the Nazi general, McDougall covers why certain groups of people (like Greek Shepherds) can do seemingly superhuman things, why the western way of life destroys our bodies, and why the gym industry is a ripoff.
It’s a classic. I was on the edge of my seat the whole time.
Signing off for now folks :)
Glad to have you back, Aaron. Get well soon.
Glad you’re back and very sorry you have food poisoning 🥴 Heal soon! I look forward to reading your yoga experience!!
